Historical Note - Rorke's Drift: On 22nd January 1879 an overwhelming force of Zulus destroyed 6 companies of the 24th Regiment of Foot and other colonial troops at the battle of Isandlwana. The following day, the Zulu reserve of 4,500 men, who had taken no part in the fighting, came upon a British field hospital at Rorke's Drift. The hospital contained 60 casualties, hospital staff and 81 troops from B Company II/24th, commanded by Lieutenants Chard and Bromhead. Given just a few hours notice of the disaster at Isandlwana Chard had used mealie bags, 2 wagons and boxes of biscuits to convert the hospital and storehouse into an improvised fort. The Zulu attack began at about 5:30pm and at 6:45pm the hospital roof had been fired. In the face of remarkable bravery and stubborn courage from the British army the Zulus finally gave up and moved away at about 4:00am, despite having nearly outnumbered the British 40 to 1. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded as a result of Rorke's Drift - the highest number ever for a single action. WBritain celebrates some of these, with the action in the hospital and the ammunition supplies.

00143 Rorke's Drift Hospital Diorama - 5 Piece Set. Limited Edition. The soldiers who rescued their comrades from the hospital complex before the outer yard of Lt. Chard's fortification was abandoned demonstrated outstanding bravery. The men of the 24th made a fighting retreat through the burning building, while others tunnelled through the walls to make an escape route. This diorama shows Privates John Williams and Alfred Hook fighting off the Zulus as they attack through the far end of the building. This set can stand alone or add-on to set 05918 - Rorke's Drift Diorama. 1999 - 2003
00144 British Character Set - 3 Piece Set. James Langley Dalton was a retired quarter master sergeant when he was caught up in the attack on Rorke's Drift. The Reverend George Smith has been caring for the spiritual needs of the sick. Contemporary accounts, recorded in Lady Butler's painting of the event, tell how he filled a borrowed haversack with bullets and went from post to post encouraging the men. Not eligible for a V.C., he was made honorary Chaplain to the Army for life as an acknowledgement of his courage and energy. 1999 - 2003
00145 2nd Company 24th Regiment of Foot Firing - 4 Piece Set - Four of the men who lined the ramparts of Lt. Chard's ad-hoc defences fire into the mass of Zulus attacking the perimeter. They are using the Martini Henry rifle, first issued to British troops in 1874. Sighted to 1,200 yards (1,000 metres) it was most murderous at about 400 yards. Its 0.450 ammunition was devastatingly effective. 1999 - 2003
00146 Zulus Firing - 4 Piece Set - Of all those British killed or wounded at Rorke's Drift outside the hospital, nearly all were shot by Zulu snipers. Out snipers are from the uThulwana and iNdluyengwe, two of the three Zulu regiments that fought at Rorke's Drift. 1999 - 2003

20040 "The Washing of the spears" - This stunning figure has been developed in consultation with renowned Zulu War expert and author, Ian Knight who's insight into the war has been invaluable in helping William Britain recreate this stunning piece. In the over-run British camp at Isandlwana, on the afternoon of 22 January 1879, a victorious Zulu warrior stands over a fallen soldier of the 24th Regiment whom he has killed in the ferocious hand-to-hand combat which characterised the height of the battle. He has washed his spear in blood, perhaps not for the first time, for his shield and the ring on his head distinguish him as a mature man who has probably been in battle before. To the victor fall the spoils, the soldiers prized rifle and ammunition belts. But with triumph comes a religious responsibility, and the warrior must release the spirit of his victim by cutting his stomach. Now wet with yesterday's blood - spiritually polluted by his triumph - the warrior must wear his enemy's red coat and stand apart from civilian life until he has undertaken rituals designed to cleanse him from the supernatural taint of shedding blood. When he returns home he will be recognised as an "iqawe", a hero. Limited Edition 500pcs World wide. - 2 Piece Set. 2009 - 2013

39002 Adjutant Teignmouth Melvill with the Queen’s Colour - As the British lines collapse and the Zulus over-run the camp at Isandlwana, Lt. Teignmouth Melvill, adjutant of the 1 Bttn. 24th Regiment, attempts to carry the Queen’s Colour of his battalion - the symbol of regimental pride and honour - to safety. A desperate ride across broken country awaited him – Melvill was to reach the Buffalo River, the border with British Natal, in safety, but lost the Colour in the flooded river as he tried to cross. Together with Lt. Neville Coghill, 1/24th, Melvill struggled onto the Natal bank, but both were caught and killed. The Colour was later recovered from the river - and in 1907 both men were awarded the posthumous Victoria Cross. A Limited Edition set exclusively commissioned from W. 50018C 24th Foot Bugle Boy, 1879 - 2010 Collectors Club Figure - 1 piece set 2010
50023C Zulu Induna on Foot. This striking piece is based on Zulu Induna mkhosana Biyela encouraging the Zulu attack at Islandawana. He is reported to have walked along in the open, ablivious to bullets striking around him, shouting at warriors to attack - a story this pose readily conveys. He was in his early forties, married with a headring, but in good physical shape (his family says he was in his prime when he was killed). His costume consisted of "twisted tails" at the front and a square of hide over the buttocks - as a chief this would have been leopard-skin. He also wore both a headring and otter-skin headband with a single crand-feather collar - worn by hereditary chiefs only - complete his uniform. This is a 1 piece set and is limited to 300 pieces worldwide - 1 piece set 2011
